Buying Your First Home? What You Should Learn About Your Roof

Posted on

If you are buying your first home, there may be many things you do not know about. One of these things is your roof. If this is true, below are two things you should learn about your roof so it will last a long time for you.

Keep It Clean

One important thing you should know is that you need to keep your roof clean. You need to inspect it during the fall months when a lot of leaves fall. You also need to inspect it in the spring. This is because a roof can go through a lot during the winter, especially if you live in an area that gets a lot of snow. If you do not have a high-pitched roof you may be able to clean it on your own.

Get a ladder and another person to hold the ladder while you climb it. Do not wear shoes that slip easily and put a pair of work gloves on. When you first arrive at the roof, stop there and inspect the gutters. If you see a lot of leaves built up, you need to clean the leaves out. If there are not a lot, you can do this by hand. If there are a lot of leaves you can use a leaf blower to blow the leaves out. This is important as gutters filled with leaves will back up with water.

Use a broom to sweep the roof to remove all leaves that may be on the roof along with other debris. If you leave leaves built up on a roof, moisture will also build up under the leaves. This can cause damage to your roof.

Have Roof Maintenance

Roof maintenance should be done by a roofing contractor. This is a good idea to do once per year. The roofing contractor will know what to look for when it comes to roof damage. It is also much safer for you to have a professional to do this for you.

The roofing contractor will inspect the shingles to make sure they are thick enough. Over time shingles can lose thickness and if this happens, you could start getting roof leaks. These shingles will have to be replaced but only if there are a few of them. If many of the shingles are very thin this would be time to replace your roof. If the roofing contractor sees that your roof has loose shingles, they will nail them back down.

Talk with the roofing contractor to learn much more about your roof so you can keep it in good condition.
